With the Blazer EV, Chevrolet is bringing its EV technology to the heart of the consumer market as an all-electric midsize crossover with a sporty edge. The Blazer EV will do everything you need a crossover to do. It will carry a driver and four passengers and their cargo in comfort. The seats will fold down for a spacious cargo area, and available all-wheel drive will take you off the pavement or keep you on it in an Idaho winter. At the same time, the Blazer EV SS will have the soul and capability of a muscle car. Of course, it also produces no emissions and can be charged in the convenience of your own home. Three trims are topping out with the upcoming SS, the first SS designation Chevrolet has used for an EV.

Performance

At the core of the Blazer EV is the Ultium platform, which also powers the Silverado EV, Equinox EV, and more EVs to come. The platform, sometimes nicknamed the “skateboard,” consists of a flat 85- or 102-kWh lithium battery under the cabin floor between the front and rear axles. The Blazer is one of the few models on the planet that is available in front-wheel drive (FWD), rear-wheel drive (RWD), and all-wheel drive (AWD).

The FWD Blazer LT is the newest model and offers a new lower entry price point for the model line. With the base 85-kWh battery, the front-mounted motor produces 220 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque. The range has not been announced. With the same battery but a motor in the front and back, the AWD 2LT and RS have a combined power of 288 horsepower and 333 lb-ft of torque and an estimated range of 279 miles. The single-motor RS has the 102-kWh battery, and a motor mounted between the rear axles for rear-wheel drive. This performance configuration raises the power to 340 hp, 325 lb-ft of torque, and 314 miles of range.

The SS will be available in the first quarter of 2025. It will have the larger 102-kWh battery and larger motors that will produce a combined 557 horsepower and up to 648 lb-ft of torque. The unique WOW (Wide Open Watts) mode features a temporary power boost that will enable 0-60 sprints of less than 4 seconds. The range for this model has not yet been announced. For all Blazer EVs, the low-mounted battery produces a low center of gravity for flat handling in the curves.

For more casual driving, the Blazer EV features one-pedal driving, in which braking can begin with the release of the accelerator pedal and continue until the car comes to a stop. You might only use the brake pedal for emergency braking.

You will want to charge your Blazer at home with a Level 2 charger whenever possible. Still, on the road, models with the 85-kWh battery have a DC-direct charging capability of up to 190 kW, adding approximately 77 miles in ten minutes. Models with the 102-kWh battery raise the DC-direct charging capability to 190 kW, adding approximately 78 miles in 10 minutes to the larger battery.

Exterior

Every angle of the Blazer expresses performance. The front changes in each trim level, with the RS adding a black grille and the SS adding a far more aggressive grille, side intakes, and lower air dam. RS and SS models also include full-width LED lighting across the front and rocker panels on the side. The body features flowing coke-bottle body surfaces with a blacked-out side window treatment. The roofline gently flows to the rear, and it all adds up to a vehicle that looks like it’s in motion while standing still. The wheel wells are filled out with 19-inch alloys on the 2LT, upgrading to 21-inch wheels on the RS and 22-inch multi-finish wheels on the SS. The SS also adds a blacked-out canopy roof.

Interior

The performance-themed design carries to the interior, where the driver is greeted by a thick-rim three-spoke steering wheel in front of an 11-inch digital driver information screen. In the center of the instrument panel, but canted toward the driver, is a large intuitive 17.7-inch-diagonal customizable infotainment touchscreen. Camaro-inspired HVAC vents add to the theme. All models feature ambient lighting, which can be customized on RS and SS trims. With a compact drivetrain and a flat floor, passengers have plenty of space to stretch out. The rear seats fold flat with the cargo floor when in cargo mode. The RS features an added design with blue and red contrast stitching. Sueded microfiber seating is found on the SS, with striking Adrenaline Red seating surfaces.

Technology

The Blazer EV is so accommodating, even a start button isn’t necessary. After closing the door, the driver pushes the brake pedal, and the Blazer EV is ready to go. The Blazer EV’s infotainment system is GM’s latest version and uses Google Built-In, which features built-in Google Maps and the Google Assistant voice recognition system.  Other vehicle-appropriate apps can be downloaded from the Google App store.

Navigation is accessible through the MyChevy app, which can also find and plan routes to charging stations. A pad on the front console can charge most modern cell phones, and USB ports allow for further connectivity. Also available is GM’s famed Super Cruise, which allows true hands-free driving on over 400,000 miles of highway in North America. The Blazer EV’s electronics enable over-the-air seamless upgrades, personalization options, and new applications to drivers on demand—as well as regular software upgrades.
